The Triumph of Faith

Paul begins with the settled result of justification: peace with God through Jesus Christ, access into grace, and joy in the hope of God's glory.

T1herefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.

Paul then includes suffering inside the same joy. Suffering produces perseverance, character, and hope, and that hope does not disappoint because God has poured his love into believers' hearts by the Holy Spirit.

3Not only that, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out His love into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, whom He has given us.

Section summaryBecause believers have been justified by faith, they have peace with God through Jesus Christ and access into grace, rejoicing in the hope of God's glory. Even suffering is gathered into that hope, because suffering produces perseverance, character, and hope, and hope does not disappoint where God's love has been poured out by the Spirit.
Role in the chapterThis opening section draws out the first consequences of justification before Paul returns to the cross itself. It sets the chapter's tone of assurance: grace does not end at acquittal but opens into hope.
