Forgiveness

Paul sets the Christian posture toward others — bless those who persecute, enter the joys and griefs of others, and live low rather than proud.

B14less those who persecute you. Bless and do not curse. 15Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep. 16Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but associate with the lowly. Do not be conceited.

Paul forbids repaying evil with evil, urges peace with everyone as far as it depends on the believer, and hands judgment over to God rather than to the offended.

17Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Carefully consider what is right in the eyes of everybody. 18If it is possible on your part, live at peace with everyone. 19Do not avenge yourselves, beloved, but leave room for God’s wrath. For it is written: “Vengeance is Mine; I will repay, says the Lord.”

Paul pivots to active kindness toward the enemy and closes with the chapter’s final rule: overcome evil with good rather than being overcome by it.

20On the contrary, 21Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Section summaryPaul extends Christian love across the line of hostility. Bless persecutors, weep with the hurting, refuse retaliation, leave wrath to God, and let good be the agent that finally disarms evil.
Role in the chapterThis closing movement turns body-love outward to enemies and to public life. Christian ethics are not merely internal; they reshape response to injury and hostility.
