Preparation for Judgment

The heavenly temple, identified as the tabernacle of the testimony, is opened, and from it come the seven angels clothed in clean, radiant garments with golden sashes. One of the four living creatures hands them seven golden bowls full of the wrath of God, signaling that the judgments are now ready to be poured out. The temple is then filled with smoke from God's glory and power so that no one can enter until the seven plagues are finished. The paragraph underscores the source, sanctity, and unstoppable completion of the coming judgments.

A5fter this I looked, and the temple — the tabernacle of the Testimony — was opened in heaven. 6And out of the temple came the seven angels with the seven plagues, dressed in clean and bright linen and girded with golden sashes around their chests. 7Then one of the four living creatures gave the seven angels seven golden bowls full of the wrath of God, who lives forever and ever. 8And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God and from His power; and no one could enter the temple until the seven plagues of the seven angels were completed.

Section summaryAfter the song, John sees the heavenly temple opened, specifically the tabernacle of the testimony. From that sanctuary come the seven angels bearing the plagues, clothed in bright linen with golden sashes, marking the purity and solemnity of their commission. One of the four living creatures gives them seven golden bowls filled with the wrath of the living God, and the temple fills with smoke from God's glory and power. The holiness of the scene is so intense that no one can enter the temple until the plagues are completed.
Role in the chapterThis closing section prepares for the bowl judgments by emphasizing that they proceed from the holy presence and irresistible glory of God.
