Chapter 13

The Beast from the Sea and more

Revelation 13 develops the dragon's earthly strategy by introducing two beasts and the mark associated with their system of worship and control. The first beast rises from the sea with horned and crowned authority, bearing blasphemous names and combining features from Daniel's beasts. The dragon gives it power, throne, and great authority, and the world marvels at its apparent recovery from a mortal wound and worships both the dragon and the beast. This beast speaks blasphemies, persecutes the saints, and exercises authority over every tribe, people, tongue, and nation for forty-two months, though those whose names are written in the Lamb's Book of Life do not belong to its worship. A second beast then rises from the earth, lamb-like in appearance but dragon-like in speech. It directs worship toward the first beast, performs deceptive signs, animates the beast's image, and enforces loyalty through a mark required for buying and selling. The chapter closes with a summons to wisdom concerning the beast's number, 666. Revelation 13 therefore reveals the satanic parody of worship, political power, and economic coercion that stands over against the Lamb and His people.

This chapter is crucial because it shows how satanic power works through visible historical structures of rule, false worship, and coercion. Revelation 12 exposed the dragon; Revelation 13 shows the dragon's earthly agents. The sea beast embodies blasphemous imperial power that demands worship and wages war on the saints, while the earth beast functions as deceptive religious propaganda, persuading and coercing humanity into false allegiance. The mark of the beast further reveals that idolatry is not merely inward belief but embodied social participation, tied to commerce, pressure, and public conformity. Yet the chapter also defines the church's challenge with clarity. The saints are called to endurance, discernment, and wisdom, not because the beasts are ultimate, but because their claims are counterfeit imitations of God's authority and the Lamb's reign. Revelation 13 therefore equips the church to recognize and resist systems of power that demand ultimate allegiance contrary to God.

The Beast from the Sea

Open section

T1hen I saw a beast with ten horns and seven heads rising out of the sea. There were ten royal crowns on its horns and blasphemous names on its heads. 2The beast I saw was like a leopard, with the feet of a bear and the mouth of a lion. And the dragon gave the beast his power and his throne and great authority. 3One of the heads of the beast appeared to have been mortally wounded. But the mortal wound was healed, and the whole world marveled and followed the beast. 4They worshiped the dragon who had given authority to the beast, and they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast, and who can wage war against it?”

5The beast was given a mouth to speak arrogant and blasphemous words, and authority to act for 42 months. 6And the beast opened its mouth to speak blasphemies against God and to slander His name and His tabernacle — those who dwell in heaven. 7Then the beast was permitted to wage war against the saints and to conquer them, and it was given authority over every tribe and people and tongue and nation. 8And all who dwell on the earth will worship the beast — all whose names have not been written from the foundation of the world in the Book of Life belonging to the Lamb who was slain. 9He who has an ear, let him hear: 10“If anyone is destined for captivity,

The Beast from the Earth

Open section

T11hen I saw another beast rising out of the earth. This beast had two horns like a lamb, but spoke like a dragon. 12And this beast exercised all the authority of the first beast and caused the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast, whose mortal wound had been healed. 13And the second beast performed great signs, even causing fire from heaven to come down to earth in the presence of the people. 14Because of the signs it was given to perform on behalf of the first beast, it deceived those who dwell on the earth, telling them to make an image to the beast that had been wounded by the sword and yet had lived. 15The second beast was permitted to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that the image could speak and cause all who refused to worship it to be killed.

The Mark of the Beast

Open section

A16nd the second beast required all people, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their forehead, 17so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark — the name of the beast or the number of its name. 18Here is a call for wisdom: Let the one who has insight calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, and that number is 666.

  1. 01vv. 1-10The Beast from the SeaJohn sees a beast rise from the sea, carrying the marks of blasphemous, composite, and oppressive power. Its form recalls the beasts of Daniel, but here they are fused into one monstrous expression of dragon-backed dominion. The dragon gives the beast its power, throne, and authority, and the world is drawn into wonder and worship because of its apparent invincibility and healed mortal wound. The beast speaks arrogant blasphemies, wages war on the saints, and is granted temporary authority over the nations. Yet the chapter distinguishes earth-dwellers who worship from those whose names belong to the Lamb's Book of Life, and it ends by calling the saints to endurance.
  2. 02vv. 11-15The Beast from the EarthA second beast rises from the earth, looking lamb-like yet speaking with the dragon's voice. It acts with the first beast's authority and directs worship toward the first beast, especially because of its healed wound. Through impressive signs, including fire from heaven, it deceives the earth-dwellers into making an image to the first beast. It is also permitted to animate that image and use it as an instrument of coercion and death. The section reveals that false worship is advanced not only by brute power but by deceptive religious performance and propaganda.
  3. 03vv. 16-18The Mark of the BeastThe second beast extends its influence into ordinary life by requiring all classes of people to receive a mark on hand or forehead. This mark is tied to the beast's name or number and becomes the condition for buying and selling. Economic life is thus yoked to beastly allegiance, making public compliance a test of belonging. The chapter ends by calling for wisdom to calculate the beast's number, 666, described as the number of a man. The section presents the mark as the social, economic, and symbolic expression of loyalty to the beastly order.
