Chapter 84

Better Is One Day in Your Courts

This psalm is a song of longing for the dwelling place of the LORD of Hosts. The singer's whole being yearns for God's courts, envies even the birds that nest near the altar, and pronounces blessing on those who dwell continually in God's house. The focus then widens to pilgrims whose strength is in God and who move through hardship toward Zion, gaining fresh strength as they appear before him. The psalm closes in prayer and confession, declaring that one day in God's courts is better than a thousand elsewhere and that the LORD withholds no good thing from those who walk uprightly.

Psalm 84 is a pilgrimage psalm that joins desire, blessing, and confidence. It presents communion with God as the believer's highest good, showing that both the journey toward his presence and the privilege of dwelling with him surpass every earthly alternative.
