Chapter 59

Deliver Me from My Enemies

This psalm is a watchman's prayer for rescue from murderous pursuers sent by Saul, moving from urgent cries for deliverance into repeated descriptions of the attackers as snarling dogs who prowl the city at night. David appeals to the LORD God of Hosts to rise against guiltless violence, asks that his enemies be exposed and gradually brought low as a warning, and then ends in a stronger key of confidence, singing of God's strength and steadfast love at daybreak because God has proved to be his fortress in distress.

Psalm 59 holds together imprecation, vigilance, and praise under persecution. It teaches that the righteous may ask God both to expose and to judge violent evil, that divine patience can itself become a moral lesson to the community, and that steadfast worship is the fitting answer to the God who guards his people through the night.

11Do not kill them, 12By the sins of their mouths 13Consume them in wrath; 14They return in the evening, 15They scavenge for food,
