Chapter 55

Cast Your Burden upon the LORD

This psalm is a storm of anxiety, betrayal, and trust in which David pleads for God to hear him as enemy pressure and inner terror close in around him. He longs to flee like a dove, describes a city saturated with violence and deceit, grieves most deeply over treachery from an intimate companion with whom he once worshiped, then turns back to steady confidence that God hears his continual cries, humbles the faithless, and sustains the one who casts his burden on the LORD.

Psalm 55 is one of Scripture's clearest portraits of betrayal trauma transposed into prayer. It teaches that panic, weariness, and outrage can all be brought before God, that treachery from within wounds more sharply than open opposition, and that divine support belongs to those who keep entrusting their burden to the LORD rather than surrendering to fear or vengeance.
