Chapter 40

I Waited Patiently for the LORD

This psalm begins with testimony: David waited patiently for the LORD, was lifted from the pit, set on secure footing, and given a new song that leads others into reverent trust. From that memory of rescue he moves into praise for God's countless works, declares that true devotion means delighting in God's will and proclaiming his righteousness openly, then turns again into urgent prayer as sins and surrounding evils overwhelm him and he asks for swift deliverance, shame for mockers, joy for seekers, and help for his own poverty and need.

Psalm 40 holds thanksgiving and lament together without contradiction. It shows that past deliverance becomes the ground for present obedience and renewed prayer: the God who rescues from the pit is the same God whose will is to be loved, whose righteousness is to be proclaimed, and whose mercy is still needed when fresh trouble and remembered sin close in.

11O LORD, do not withhold Your mercy from me; 12For evils without number surround me;

13Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me; 14May those who seek my life 15May those who say to me, “Aha, aha!” 16May all who seek You 17But I am poor and needy;
