Chapter 4

Answer Me When I Call!

This evening psalm begins with David's direct cry for God to answer as he has done before, then turns outward to confront those who love falsehood and trample his honor. Yet the chapter does not end in agitation: trust in the LORD, upright worship, and the light of God's face lead finally to deeper joy and the ability to lie down in peace.

Psalm 4 extends the early Psalter's movement from distress to confidence, but with a quieter tone than Psalm 3. It teaches that prayer can address both God and the community at once, and that the deepest answer to public unrest is not control but settled security in the LORD's favor.
