Chapter 20

The Day of Trouble

This psalm is a communal prayer offered for the king on the day of trouble, asking that the LORD answer, protect, remember worship, and grant the desires shaped by his purpose. As the prayer unfolds it turns into confidence that the LORD saves his anointed, and it closes by contrasting fragile military power with the enduring strength found in the name of the LORD.

Psalm 20 gives the Psalter one of its clearest liturgies of corporate intercession for the king. It binds worship, warfare, and trust together by teaching that national hope does not finally rest on visible strength, but on the saving action of God for his anointed and for the people joined to him.
