Chapter 130

Out of the Depths

This psalm cries to the Lord from the depths and asks to be heard. It confesses that no one could stand if the LORD kept a full record of sins, but because forgiveness belongs to him, the speaker waits in hope, and the psalm widens at the end into a call for all Israel to hope in the LORD, whose steadfast love and full redemption are enough to redeem his people from all their iniquities.

Within the Songs of Ascents, Psalm 130 turns pilgrimage inward without becoming private or closed. It fits Book V by joining penitence to hope: the same God before whom sin cannot stand is the God with whom forgiveness lives, so personal waiting becomes communal expectation and Israel is invited to rest in the LORD's redeeming mercy.
