Chapter 13

How Long, O LORD?

This brief psalm compresses lament into a few piercing questions, as David feels forgotten by God, overwhelmed within himself, and threatened by enemies who seem poised to prevail. Yet the song does not end in abandonment: after pleading for renewed light and deliverance, it settles again in the LORD's steadfast love and anticipates praise for his generous dealing.

Psalm 13 is one of the Psalter's clearest examples of how lament moves without denial from complaint to confidence. It teaches that faith may speak the full ache of delay before God, yet still find its resting place not in changed circumstances first, but in covenant mercy remembered and trusted.
