Chapter 11

In the LORD I Take Refuge

The psalm begins with the refusal to flee in panic because refuge has already been found in the LORD. Even when the wicked threaten in darkness and the foundations seem ruined, the chapter insists that God still reigns from his holy throne, tests every person rightly, and will finally judge violence while welcoming the upright into his presence.

Psalm 11 adds a crucial note to the Psalter's theology of trust: faith is not denial that structures can collapse, but confidence that God's rule does not collapse with them. It answers social and moral instability by lifting the eyes from frightened counsel to the righteous Judge who still sees, tests, and loves justice.
