Proverbs 2:1-22·~1 min

The Benefits of Wisdom

The son is called to receive, treasure, and pursue wisdom with intensity, crying out for insight and seeking it like hidden treasure. Such earnest searching leads to the fear of the LORD and the knowledge of God.

M1y son, if you accept my words 2if you incline your ear to wisdom 3if you truly call out to insight 4if you seek it like silver 5then you will discern the fear of the LORD

The LORD is the giver of wisdom, storing up sound judgment for the upright and guarding their way. When wisdom enters the heart and knowledge becomes pleasant, discretion and understanding begin to watch over the learner.

6For the LORD gives wisdom; 7He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; 8to guard the paths of justice 9Then you will discern righteousness 10For wisdom will enter your heart, 11Discretion will watch over you,

Wisdom delivers from evil men who abandon straight paths, delight in perversity, and walk in crooked ways. The learner is protected from becoming entangled in communities shaped by darkness and distortion.

12to deliver you from the way of evil, 13from those who leave the straight paths 14from those who enjoy doing evil 15whose paths are crooked

Wisdom also rescues from the forbidden woman, whose flattering speech conceals covenant betrayal and a house sinking toward death. Those who go to her do not easily return to the paths of life.

16It will rescue you from the forbidden woman, 17who abandons the partner of her youth 18For her house sinks down to death, 19None who go to her return

The chapter closes by setting the righteous and the wicked on opposite ends: the good remain in the land, while the wicked are cut off and uprooted from it. Wisdom therefore governs not only daily choices but ultimate belonging and exclusion.

20So you will follow in the ways of the good, 21For the upright will inhabit the land, 22but the wicked will be cut off from the land,

Section summaryThe chapter teaches that wisdom must be actively sought, received, and treasured, because the LORD gives it and uses it to guard the upright. Once wisdom enters the heart, it preserves the learner from corrupt men, the forbidden woman, and the ruin that overtakes the wicked, while setting him among the righteous who remain in the land.
Role in the chapterThis section functions as the chapter's single sustained appeal and promise. It shows wisdom as both a pursuit and a protection, joining reverent desire for understanding with the concrete moral outcomes that follow from receiving it.
