Philippians 4:10-20·~1 min

The Generosity of the Philippians

Paul rejoices greatly in the Lord that the Philippians' concern for him has blossomed again, though he knows they were always concerned and only lacked opportunity. He is not speaking out of need, for he has learned contentment in plenty and in want and can do all things through Christ who strengthens him, yet he warmly says that they did well to share in his trouble.

N10ow I rejoice greatly in the Lord that at last you have revived your concern for me. You were indeed concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it. 11I am not saying this out of need, for I have learned to be content regardless of my circumstances. 12I know how to live humbly, and I know how to abound. In any and every situation I have learned the secret of being filled and being hungry, of having plenty and having need. 13I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength. 14Nevertheless, you have done well to share in my affliction.

Paul reminds the Philippians that from the first days of the gospel they alone entered into partnership with him in giving and receiving and that they sent help more than once even in Thessalonica. He is not seeking gifts for his own sake, but fruit credited to their account, and he says their offering through Epaphroditus is fragrant and pleasing to God, before ending with confidence that God will supply all their needs and with glory to God the Father.

15And as you Philippians know, in the early days of the gospel, when I left Macedonia, no church but you partnered with me in the matter of giving and receiving. 16For even while I was in Thessalonica, you provided for my needs again and again. 17Not that I am seeking a gift, but I am looking for the fruit that may be credited to your account. 18I have all I need and more, now that I have received your gifts from Epaphroditus. They are a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, well-pleasing to God. 19And my God will supply all your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus. 20To our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen.

Section summaryPaul rejoices over the Philippians' renewed concern for him, but he makes clear that he is not speaking from desperate need, since he has learned contentment in every condition through Christ who strengthens him. Even so, he warmly acknowledges their partnership in giving from the earliest days of the gospel, receives their gift as a fragrant sacrifice pleasing to God, and responds with confidence that God will supply all their needs according to his riches in Christ.
