Philippians 2:12-18·~1 min

Lights in the World

Paul urges the Philippians, who have always obeyed, to work out their salvation with fear and trembling because God himself is at work in them to will and act for his good pleasure. They are to do all things without grumbling or arguing so that they may be blameless children of God who shine in the world while holding fast to the word of life.

T12herefore, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not only in my presence, but now even more in my absence, continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling. 13For it is God who works in you to will and to act on behalf of His good purpose. 14Do everything without complaining or arguing, 15so that you may be blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and perverse generation, in which you shine as lights in the world 16as you hold forth the word of life, in order that I may boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor in vain.

Paul says that even if he is being poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrifice and service of their faith, he is glad and rejoices with them all. They likewise are to rejoice with him.

17But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you. 18So you too should be glad and rejoice with me.

Section summaryPaul tells the beloved Philippians to work out their salvation with fear and trembling, not because God is absent but because God is actively at work in them to will and to work for his good pleasure. Without grumbling or disputing they are to be blameless children of God who shine as lights in a crooked generation while holding fast to the word of life, and Paul says that even if his own life is poured out on their sacrifice and service, he rejoices with them.
