Retirement for Levites

The LORD sets the years for Levitical labor, from age twenty-five until fifty, and then limits older men to assistance rather than the work itself. Their service remains real, but its form changes with age.

A23nd the LORD said to Moses, 24“This applies to the Levites: Men twenty-five years of age or older shall enter to perform the service in the work at the Tent of Meeting. 25But at the age of fifty, they must retire from performing the work and no longer serve. 26After that, they may assist their brothers in fulfilling their duties at the Tent of Meeting, but they themselves are not to do the work. This is how you are to assign responsibilities to the Levites.”

Section summaryThe LORD sets the age boundaries for Levitical work: men begin at twenty-five and retire from the labor at fifty. After that, they may still assist their brothers, but the work itself passes to others.
Role in the chapterThis closing section defines the limits of Levitical service. It shows that even holy work is ordered by appointed seasons and shared responsibility.
