Numbers 3:33-37·~1 min
The Merarites
The Merarite clans are named and counted, then stationed on the north under Zuriel. Their work concerns the tabernacle's frames, bars, posts, bases, and the courtyard's supporting pieces.
F33rom Merari came the clans of the Mahlites and Mushites; these were the Merarite clans. 34The number of all the males a month old or more was 6,200. 35The leader of the families of the Merarites was Zuriel son of Abihail; they were to camp on the north side of the tabernacle. 36The duties assigned to the sons of Merari were the tabernacle’s frames, crossbars, posts, bases, and all its equipment— all the service for these items, 37as well as the posts of the surrounding courtyard with their bases, tent pegs, and ropes.
Section summaryThe Merarite clans are counted, placed north of the tabernacle, and given the structural parts of the dwelling to carry and maintain. Their charge falls on frames, posts, bases, and the heavier materials that hold the whole arrangement upright.
Role in the chapterThis section completes the threefold Levitical arrangement around the tabernacle. It shows that even the less visible supports of the sanctuary belong to holy service.
