Chapter 24

Balaam’s Third Oracle and more

Numbers 24 brings Balaam’s blessings and warnings to their height. He stops seeking omens, sees Israel as the Spirit comes upon him, and speaks of their beauty, strength, and security; then, after Balak dismisses him, he announces a future ruler from Jacob and the downfall of surrounding nations.

This chapter completes the Balaam cycle by turning failed curses into a sweeping vision of Israel’s future. It prepares for the next movement in Numbers by showing that Israel’s destiny is secured by the LORD, even before the nation’s own failures come into view.
