The Censers Reserved for Holy Use

The LORD tells Moses that Eleazar must gather the censers from the fire and scatter the coals, because the censers are holy. Their bronze is to be hammered into sheets for the altar as a sign, since they were presented before the LORD.

T36hen the LORD said to Moses, 37“Tell Eleazar son of Aaron the priest to remove the censers from the flames and to scatter the coals far away, because the censers are holy. 38As for the censers of those who sinned at the cost of their own lives, hammer them into sheets to overlay the altar, for these were presented before the LORD, and so have become holy. They will serve as a sign to the Israelites.”

Eleazar takes the bronze censers of the dead and has them hammered out for the altar, just as the LORD commanded. The overlay becomes a reminder that only Aaron’s descendants may offer incense before the LORD.

39So Eleazar the priest took the bronze censers brought by those who had been burned up, and he had them hammered out to overlay the altar, 40just as the LORD commanded him through Moses. This was to be a reminder to the Israelites that no outsider who is not a descendant of Aaron should approach to offer incense before the LORD, lest he become like Korah and his followers.

Section summaryAfter the judgment, the LORD tells Eleazar to collect the censers because they have become holy through being offered before Him. Their bronze is hammered onto the altar as a standing sign that no outsider may approach to offer incense.
Role in the chapterThis section turns the remains of rebellion into a permanent reminder. What had been used presumptuously in worship is not discarded as common metal but absorbed into Israel’s memory of guarded holiness.
