The Restoration of Zion
The LORD promises that on that day He will gather the lame and those He has afflicted, transforming the weak and cast off into a remnant and a strong nation. The reign of the LORD over them will begin from Mount Zion, and former dominion will return to Jerusalem. Yet the chapter does not leap over suffering. Zion is asked why she cries aloud, as though no king were in her, and is told to writhe like a woman in labor. The city must leave its present place, dwell in the open country, and go as far as Babylon. Even there, however, exile is not abandonment, for there the LORD will redeem His people from the hand of their enemies.
“6On that day,” declares the LORD, 7And I will make the lame into a remnant, 8And you, O watchtower of the flock, 9Why do you now cry aloud? 10Writhe in agony, O Daughter of Zion,
Many nations gather against Zion with hostile satisfaction, longing to see her exposed and defiled. But their perspective is blind. They do not know the thoughts of the LORD or understand that He has assembled them like sheaves to the threshing floor. Zion is therefore commanded to rise and thresh, for the LORD will strengthen her with horns of iron and hooves of bronze. The nations' gain will be devoted to the LORD, and their wealth to the Lord of all the earth. What looked like Zion's vulnerability becomes the setting for her divinely empowered victory.
