A Warning to the Priests

A decree is issued specifically to the priests, warning that if they do not listen and take to heart the honor due the LORD's name, their blessings will become curses. The threatened judgment is visceral and humiliating, showing that priestly corruption is not a small failure but an offense against the holiness of worship itself. Yet even this severe word is given so that the priests may know the LORD intends to preserve the covenant with Levi. The paragraph combines disciplinary threat with covenant purpose.

1And now this decree is for you, O priests: 2If you do not listen, and if you do not take it to heart to honor My name,” says the LORD of Hosts, “I will send a curse among you, and I will curse your blessings. Yes, I have already begun to curse them, because you are not taking it to heart. 3Behold, I will rebuke your descendants, and I will spread dung on your faces, the waste from your feasts, and you will be carried off with it. 4Then you will know that I have sent you this commandment so that My covenant with Levi may continue,” says the LORD of Hosts.

The LORD recalls His covenant with Levi as a covenant of life and peace, shaped by reverence and awe before His name. The ideal priest spoke true instruction, walked in peace and uprightness, and turned many away from iniquity. Because the priest is meant to preserve knowledge and function as the messenger of the LORD of Hosts, the priesthood carries a teaching office as well as a sacrificial one. The paragraph sets a noble pattern against which present failure becomes unmistakable.

5“My covenant with him was one of life and peace, which I gave to him; it called for reverence, and he revered Me and stood in awe of My name. 6True instruction was in his mouth, and nothing false was found on his lips. He walked with Me in peace and uprightness, and he turned many from iniquity. 7For the lips of a priest should preserve knowledge, and people should seek instruction from his mouth, because he is the messenger of the LORD of Hosts.

In contrast to that earlier standard, the current priests have departed from the way, caused many to stumble by their teaching, and violated the covenant of Levi. Because they have not kept the LORD's ways and have shown partiality in their instruction, the LORD has made them despised and humiliated before the people. The paragraph shows that failed teaching produces public dishonor as a fitting covenant consequence.

8But you have departed from the way, and your instruction has caused many to stumble. You have violated the covenant of Levi,” says the LORD of Hosts. 9“So I in turn have made you despised and humiliated before all the people, because you have not kept My ways, but have shown partiality in matters of the law.”

Section summaryThe chapter begins with a direct decree to the priests, warning them that if they will not honor the LORD's name He will curse their blessings and publicly shame them. This rebuke is framed against the standard of the covenant with Levi, which was marked by life, peace, reverence, truthful instruction, uprightness, and the turning of many from iniquity. Priests were meant to preserve knowledge and serve as messengers of the LORD of Hosts, but instead they have turned aside, caused many to stumble, and shown partiality in matters of instruction. Because they have corrupted their calling, they are made despised and humiliated before the people.
Role in the chapterThis section exposes the collapse of priestly calling by measuring corrupt leaders against the original covenant purpose of Levi.
