Fat and Blood Forbidden

The LORD forbids Israel to eat the fat of sacrificial animals, though fat from animals found dead may be used for other purposes. He also forbids all blood, and anyone who eats either fat or blood is cut off from the people.

T22hen the LORD said to Moses, 23“Speak to the Israelites and say, ‘You are not to eat any of the fat of an ox, a sheep, or a goat. 24The fat of an animal found dead or mauled by wild beasts may be used for any other purpose, but you must not eat it. 25If anyone eats the fat of an animal from which a food offering may be presented to the LORD, the one who eats it must be cut off from his people. 26You must not eat the blood of any bird or animal in any of your dwellings. 27If anyone eats blood, that person must be cut off from his people.’”

Section summaryThis section forbids Israel to eat the fat of sacrificial herd and flock animals or the blood of any bird or animal. Both are treated as holy boundaries, and violating them brings removal from the people.
Role in the chapterIt draws a clear line around what belongs to the LORD and what Israel must refuse. The section reinforces holiness not by a sacrifice’s performance but by limits placed on ordinary eating.
