Sins Requiring a Guilt Offering

The LORD speaks to Moses about sins of deceit, theft, extortion, and false swearing over a neighbor’s property. These acts against another person are named as unfaithfulness against the LORD.

A1nd the LORD said to Moses, 2“If someone sins and acts unfaithfully against the LORD by deceiving his neighbor in regard to a deposit or security entrusted to him or stolen, or if he extorts his neighbor 3or finds lost property and lies about it and swears falsely, or if he commits any such sin that a man might commit—

Once guilt is recognized, the offender must restore what was taken or lied about, add a fifth, and repay the owner. On that same day he must also bring an unblemished ram as a guilt offering.

4once he has sinned and becomes guilty, he must return what he has stolen or taken by extortion, or the deposit entrusted to him, or the lost property he found, 5or anything else about which he has sworn falsely. 6He must make restitution in full, add a fifth of the value, and pay it to the owner on the day he acknowledges his guilt. Then he must bring to the priest his guilt offering to the LORD: an unblemished ram of proper value from the flock.

The priest makes atonement before the LORD, and the guilty person is forgiven for whatever incurred guilt.

7In this way the priest will make atonement for him before the LORD, and he will be forgiven for anything he may have done to incur guilt.”

Section summaryThe section treats fraud, theft, and false dealing with a neighbor as unfaithfulness against the LORD. Guilt is answered by full restitution with an added fifth, followed by a ram for atonement and forgiveness.
Role in the chapterThis opening section ties social wrongs to covenant guilt. It shows that repair is not only ritual but also practical, requiring wrong done to a neighbor to be openly set right inside Israel’s worship.
