Lamentations

Chapter 4

The Distress of Zion

Lamentations 4 returns to Jerusalem's outward devastation, contrasting the city's former glory with its present degradation in famine, siege, and public disgrace. The chapter traces how precious people have become like broken pottery, how starvation has overturned natural affections, how priestly and prophetic sins helped bring the catastrophe, and how even the king's fall exposed the collapse of Judah's last earthly hopes, before ending with a brief word that Zion's punishment will not last forever.

This chapter complements the earlier laments by focusing on visible reversal: beauty becomes ruin, privilege becomes dust, and royal hope is trapped. It reinforces the justice of judgment while also preparing the book's close by hinting that Zion's punishment has an end, even as Edom's pride remains exposed for future reckoning.

17All the while our eyes were failing 18They stalked our every step, 19Those who chased us were swifter 20The LORD’s anointed, the breath of our life,

21So rejoice and be glad, O Daughter of Edom, 22O Daughter of Zion, your punishment is complete;
