Chapter 3

The Prophet’s Afflictions and more

Lamentations 3 shifts from the city's collective grief to the testimony of an afflicted individual who speaks as though he carries Jerusalem's suffering in his own body. The chapter begins in darkness and near-despair, but at its center it reaches the book's clearest confession of hope in the LORD's steadfast love, then moves outward again into repentance, appeal, remembered deliverance, and a plea for God to judge persistent enemies justly.

This chapter is the theological center of Lamentations. It does not cancel judgment or grief, but it insists that hope is still possible because the LORD's mercies are not exhausted, His compassion is not absent from affliction, and His justice still governs both the sufferer and the oppressor.

God seems at first like an enemy lying in wait, and the sufferer concludes that his strength and hope have perished. This section gives unfiltered expression to felt abandonment under divine judgment.
  2. 02vv. 19-36The Prophet’s HopeRemembering affliction humbles the soul, yet the speaker deliberately calls to mind the LORD's steadfast love, mercy, faithfulness, and goodness to those who wait for Him. He affirms that it is good to bear the yoke, sit in silence, and wait quietly for salvation because the Lord does not cast off forever and does not afflict willingly. Hope emerges here not from changed circumstances but from God's character.
  3. 03vv. 37-66God’s JusticeThe speaker affirms that no word stands unless the Lord commands it, and that both adversity and good come under His rule, so the right response is self-examination, repentance, and lifted hearts. The chapter then moves through confession, tears, remembered pursuit, prayer from the pit, divine nearness, and appeal for the LORD to see the malice of enemies. It ends by asking God to repay and pursue unrepentant oppressors according to their deeds.
