Gideon’s Ephod

Israel asks Gideon, his son, and his grandson to rule because he has saved them from Midian. Gideon refuses dynastic rule and says the LORD is their ruler.

T22hen the Israelites said to Gideon, “Rule over us — you and your son and grandson — for you have saved us from the hand of Midian.” 23But Gideon replied, “I will not rule over you, nor will my son. The LORD shall rule over you.”

Gideon then asks for gold earrings from the spoil, and the people willingly give a large amount along with other royal goods. He makes an ephod from it in Ophrah, and Israel turns to it in unfaithfulness, bringing ruin near his household.

24Then he added, “Let me make a request of you, that each of you give me an earring from his plunder.” (For the enemies had gold earrings because they were Ishmaelites.) 25“We will give them gladly,” they replied. 26So they spread out a garment, and each man threw an earring from his plunder onto it. The weight of the gold earrings he had requested was 1,700 shekels, in addition to the crescent ornaments, the pendants, the purple garments of the kings of Midian, and the chains from the necks of their camels. 27From all this Gideon made an ephod, which he placed in Ophrah, his hometown. But soon all Israel prostituted themselves by worshiping it there, and it became a snare to Gideon and his household.

Section summaryIsrael asks Gideon to establish a ruling house, but he refuses and says the LORD will rule. Yet he gathers gold from the spoil and makes an ephod at Ophrah, and it becomes an object of unfaithfulness and a trap for his house.
Role in the chapterThis section turns from battlefield success to the danger that follows it. Gideon speaks rightly about the LORD’s rule, but his next act leaves Israel entangled in a new form of false worship.
