Joshua’s Death and Burial

After Joshua dismisses the people, Israel settles its inheritances and serves the LORD through Joshua's lifetime and the elders who outlive him. Then Joshua dies at one hundred ten and is buried in Ephraim.

A6fter Joshua had dismissed the people, the Israelites went out to take possession of the land, each to his own inheritance. 7And the people served the LORD throughout the days of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him, who had seen all the great works that the LORD had done for Israel. 8And Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died at the age of 110. 9They buried him in the land of his inheritance, at Timnath-heres in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.

Section summaryThe chapter turns back to Joshua's generation, when Israel went out to its inheritance and served the LORD while Joshua and the elders who had seen His works were still alive. Joshua then dies and is buried in his own inheritance.
Role in the chapterThis brief remembrance provides the contrast the chapter needs. It shows that Israel once lived in remembered obedience before a later generation broke from that memory.
