Chapter 19

Simeon’s Inheritance and more

Joshua 19 completes the tribal allotments, naming the portions for Simeon, Zebulun, Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, and Dan before turning at last to Joshua’s own inheritance. The chapter moves through borders and cities in steady order, then closes at Shiloh with the land’s division finished before the LORD.

After the earlier allotments in Joshua 13–18, this chapter brings the distribution near its end and gives the remaining tribes their place in the land. Its closing notice also honors Joshua’s modest share and marks the work of division as complete.

T1he second lot came out for the clans of the tribe of Simeon: 2Their inheritance lay within the territory of Judah and included Beersheba (or Sheba), Moladah, 3Hazar-shual, Balah, Ezem, 4Eltolad, Bethul, Hormah, 5Ziklag, Beth-marcaboth, Hazar-susah, 6Beth-lebaoth, and Sharuhen— thirteen cities, along with their villages. 7Ain, Rimmon, Ether, and Ashan— four cities, along with their villages, 8and all the villages surrounding these cities as far as Baalath-beer (Ramah of the Negev). 9This was the inheritance of the clans of the tribe of Simeon. So the Simeonites received an inheritance within Judah’s portion.

There were twenty-two cities, along with their villages. 31This was the inheritance of the clans of the tribe of Asher, including these cities and their villages.

vv. 49-51

Joshua’s Inheritance

Open section

W49hen they had finished distributing the land into its territories, the Israelites gave Joshua son of Nun an inheritance among them, 50as the LORD had commanded. They gave him the city of Timnath-serah in the hill country of Ephraim, as he requested. He rebuilt the city and settled in it. 51These are the inheritances that Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the heads of the families distributed by lot to the tribes of Israel at Shiloh before the LORD at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. So they finished dividing up the land.

Each section keeps the passage focused, adds summaries and cross references, and gives verse-level links.

  1. 01vv. 1-9Simeon’s InheritanceThe lot for Simeon places its towns inside Judah’s territory, listing the cities and villages that make up its share. The section ends by explaining that Simeon’s inheritance comes from Judah because Judah’s portion proves too large.
  2. 02vv. 10-16Zebulun’s InheritanceZebulun’s lot is described through a border that runs west, east, and north before ending in the Valley of Iphtah-el. The section then names the towns within that border and seals the allotment as Zebulun’s inheritance.
  3. 03vv. 17-23Issachar’s InheritanceIssachar’s allotment is given through a list of towns spread across its territory, then through a border that reaches Tabor, Shahazumah, Beth-shemesh, and the Jordan. The section closes by naming the whole as the inheritance of Issachar’s clans.
  4. 04vv. 24-31Asher’s InheritanceAsher’s inheritance is mapped through a long northern and coastal border touching Carmel, Sidon, Tyre, and the sea, while also naming the cities within it. The section emphasizes the breadth of Asher’s territory before closing with the usual formula of inheritance.
  5. 05vv. 32-39Naphtali’s InheritanceNaphtali’s lot is set out by a border running from northern landmarks to the Jordan and back westward beside neighboring tribes. The section then names its fortified cities and villages, giving Naphtali a defined and defensible place in the land.
  6. 06vv. 40-48Dan’s InheritanceDan receives its allotted towns near the coast, but the section also remembers a later struggle in which the Danites lose that territory and seize Leshem instead. The inheritance is thus named both as given and as contested before it is finally possessed elsewhere.
  7. 07vv. 49-51Joshua’s InheritanceAfter the tribes receive their portions, Israel gives Joshua an inheritance among them, and he settles in Timnath-serah in Ephraim’s hill country. The chapter then closes at Shiloh, where Eleazar, Joshua, and the family heads finish dividing the land before the LORD.
