Chapter 3

The LORD Judges the Nations and Blessings for God’s People

Joel 3 brings the book to its final horizon by turning from Judah's restoration to the judgment of the nations and the lasting security of God's people. The chapter begins with the LORD gathering the nations into the valley of judgment because of how they scattered Israel, trafficked in human lives, and desecrated what belonged to God. From there Joel depicts a cosmic courtroom and harvest scene, where the nations are summoned to the valley of decision under the roar of the LORD from Zion. The chapter closes by reversing the threat of devastation with a picture of abundance, holiness, and lasting habitation for Judah under the indwelling presence of God.

Within Joel, this final chapter completes the book's movement from locust plague and communal repentance to eschatological reckoning and restored inheritance. The same day of the LORD that terrifies creation in the earlier chapters now becomes the means by which God vindicates His people and judges their enemies. Joel 3 therefore serves as the book's judicial and hopeful conclusion, showing that restoration is inseparable from God's public justice and His settled dwelling in Zion.

1Yes, in those days and at that time, 2I will gather all the nations 3They cast lots for My people; 4Now what do you have against Me, O Tyre, Sidon, and all the regions of Philistia? Are you rendering against Me a recompense? If you retaliate against Me, I will swiftly and speedily return your recompense upon your heads. 5For you took My silver and gold and carried off My finest treasures to your temples. 6You sold the people of Judah and Jerusalem to the Greeks, to send them far from their homeland. 7Behold, I will rouse them from the places to which you sold them; I will return your recompense upon your heads. 8I will sell your sons and daughters into the hands of the people of Judah, and they will sell them to the Sabeans — to a distant nation.”

9Proclaim this among the nations: 10Beat your plowshares into swords 11Come quickly, all you surrounding nations, 12Let the nations be roused 13Swing the sickle, 14Multitudes, multitudes 15The sun and moon will grow dark, 16The LORD will roar from Zion
