Judah’s Sin and Punishment

The bones of Judah's kings, officials, priests, prophets, and people will be taken from their graves and spread out before the heavens they once loved and served. Their remains will lie unburied like refuse, and the scattered survivors of this evil family will choose death over life.

1At that time,” declares the LORD, “the bones of the kings of Judah, the bones of the officials, the bones of the priests, the bones of the prophets, and the bones of the people of Jerusalem will be removed from their graves. 2They will be exposed to the sun and moon, and to all the host of heaven which they have loved, served, followed, consulted, and worshiped. Their bones will not be gathered up or buried, but will become like dung lying on the ground. 3And wherever I have banished them, the remnant of this evil family will choose death over life,” declares the LORD of Hosts.

The LORD asks why this people keeps falling and refusing to rise, holding fast to deceit instead of returning. He has listened for repentance and found none, while even migratory birds know their seasons better than Judah knows the judgment of the LORD.

4So you are to tell them this is what the LORD says: 5Why then have these people turned away? 6I have listened and heard; 7Even the stork in the sky

Claims of wisdom collapse because the lying pen has twisted the law and the word of the LORD has been rejected. Those regarded as wise are left ashamed, dismayed, and trapped by the very truth they dismissed.

8How can you say, ‘We are wise, 9The wise will be put to shame;

Because everyone from least to greatest is greedy and deceitful, and because prophets and priests keep healing wounds lightly with talk of peace, judgment falls again without shame or recovery. Harvest, grapes, figs, and leaves all fail together as the LORD takes away what He had given.

10Therefore I will give their wives to other men 11They dress the wound of the daughter of My people 12Are they ashamed of the abomination they have committed? 13I will take away their harvest,

Section summaryThe opening section moves from the shame of exposed bones to the deeper shame of a people who keep turning away without returning. Judah cannot claim wisdom while rejecting the word of the LORD, and her leaders continue to soothe disaster lightly, so loss comes upon field, vine, and fig tree under a judgment that fits both her falsehood and her stubborn refusal to be ashamed.
Role in the chapterThis section establishes the chapter's main diagnosis: Judah is not merely guilty but uncorrectable in her present state. It ties idolatrous disgrace, moral stubbornness, and false counsel together before the invasion is heard more directly.
