Jehoiachin Released from Prison

In the thirty-seventh year of Jehoiachin's exile, Evil-merodach king of Babylon lifts up the head of the captive Judean king and brings him out of prison. He speaks kindly to him, elevates him above the other captive kings in Babylon, changes his prison clothes, and gives him a regular place at the royal table. Jehoiachin then receives a continual allowance for all his remaining days.

O31n the twenty-fifth day of the twelfth month of the thirty-seventh year of the exile of Jehoiachin king of Judah, in the first year of the reign of Evil-merodach king of Babylon, he pardoned Jehoiachin king of Judah and released him from prison. 32And he spoke kindly to Jehoiachin and set his throne above the thrones of the other kings who were with him in Babylon. 33So Jehoiachin changed out of his prison clothes, and he dined regularly at the king’s table for the rest of his life. 34And the king of Babylon provided Jehoiachin a daily portion for the rest of his life, until the day of his death.

Section summaryAfter many years in captivity, Jehoiachin king of Judah is released from prison by Evil-merodach king of Babylon, spoken to kindly, and given a seat above the other captive kings. His prison garments are changed, he regularly dines in the king's presence, and a continual allowance is provided for him for the rest of his life. The book closes not with restoration, but with a modest sign that the royal line still lives under God's providence.
Role in the chapterThis closing section leaves the book with a narrow but meaningful note of Davidic survival after judgment.
