Jeremiah 14:19-22·~1 min

A Prayer for Mercy

Jeremiah asks whether Judah has been completely rejected and why no healing has come, then confesses the people's wickedness and the sins of their fathers. He pleads that for the sake of God's name, throne, and covenant He will not despise them, since no idol or heaven can send rain and only the LORD can do these things.

H19ave You rejected Judah completely? 20We acknowledge our wickedness, O LORD, 21For the sake of Your name do not despise us; 22Can the worthless idols of the nations bring rain?

Section summaryThe chapter closes with Jeremiah's prayer of mercy, a plea that does not deny sin but confesses it openly and asks whether Judah has been utterly rejected. The prophet grounds his appeal not in innocence or in idols, but in the LORD's own name, throne, covenant, and creative power over rain and heavens, waiting on Him alone as the only true source of help.
Role in the chapterThis section preserves the possibility of appeal even in the face of explicit judgment. It shows Jeremiah standing between confession and hope, refusing false saviors while still asking God to remember His covenant identity among His people.
