Judgment against Israel’s Pride

The Lord's message against Jacob is not hidden; all the people know it, yet their response is arrogant self-confidence rather than repentance. They boast that if bricks fall they will rebuild with stone and if sycamores are cut down they will replace them with cedars, turning discipline into an occasion for national bravado.

T8he Lord has sent a message against Jacob, 9All the people will know it — 10“The bricks have fallen,

Because the people remain proud, the LORD raises adversaries against them from every direction, surrounding them with consuming pressure. Even this chastisement, however, does not end the matter, and the refrain makes clear that judgment continues because the underlying heart has not changed.

11The LORD has raised up the foes of Rezin against him 12Aram from the east and Philistia from the west

Section summaryAfter the vision of the coming king, the chapter returns to the northern kingdom and announces that the Lord has already sent a word against Jacob. Yet instead of humbling themselves, the people answer collapse with swaggering resolve to rebuild stronger, so God stirs up enemies around them and devours them from every side while His anger remains unspent.
