Heaven Is My Throne

The LORD declares that heaven is His throne and earth His footstool, so no house built by human hands can serve as though it contained or completed Him. Instead, He looks with favor on the one who is humble, contrite in spirit, and trembling at His word, making inward reverence the true mark of the worshiper He receives.

T1his is what the LORD says: 2Has not My hand made all these things?

Ritual acts offered by those who choose their own ways are exposed as abhorrent, equivalent to violence and idolatry rather than acceptable worship. Because they refused God's call and delighted in what He hates, He chooses for them their terrors; meanwhile those who tremble at His word but are mocked and excluded by religious pretenders are told that the LORD will appear to their joy and to the shame of their enemies, even as the sound of recompense rises from city and temple.

3Whoever slaughters an ox is like one who slays a man; 4So I will choose their punishment 5You who tremble at His word, 6Hear the uproar from the city;

Section summaryThe chapter opens by declaring that heaven is God's throne and earth His footstool, making clear that no human-built house can contain Him. What matters is not ritual performance but humble contrition and trembling at His word, because those who multiply sacrifices while cherishing evil are as offensive as idolaters, yet those hated by false brethren for honoring God's word will be vindicated when the LORD repays from His city and sanctuary.
Role in the chapterThis section establishes that true worship is measured by humble submission to God rather than by external religious display.
