Here Is My Servant

The LORD publicly presents His Servant as upheld, chosen, delighted in, and endowed with the Spirit for the mission of bringing justice to the nations. Yet the manner of that mission is striking: He does not advance by noisy force, does not crush the bruised or extinguish the faint, and does not lose heart until justice is set in place so firmly that even distant coastlands wait for His instruction.

Section summaryThe opening section introduces the LORD's Servant as the one whom God upholds and in whom He delights, the one upon whom His Spirit rests. This Servant will bring forth justice without violence or self-promotion, remain steady until justice is established in the earth, and act as a covenant for the people and a light for the nations, opening blind eyes and freeing prisoners, all in a way that secures glory for the LORD alone.
Role in the chapterThis section establishes the Servant as the central agent of God's gentle yet unstoppable redemptive justice.
