Judgment on the Nations

Isaiah summons nations, peoples, earth, and world to come near and listen because the LORD is enraged against all the nations and has devoted their armies to destruction. The result is total disgrace and upheaval: the slain are left unburied, the stench rises, mountains melt with blood, and even the heavenly host appears to dissolve and fall like withered leaves from vine and fig tree.

C1ome near, O nations, to listen; 2The LORD is angry with all the nations 3Their slain will be left unburied, 4All the stars of heaven will be dissolved.

Section summaryThe opening movement calls the whole world to attention because the LORD's wrath is directed against all nations and their armies. The imagery is expansive and terrifying: corpses lie unburied, mountains dissolve with blood, and the heavens themselves roll up, communicating that this is no localized skirmish but a judgment whose scale reaches from earth to sky.
Role in the chapterThis section universalizes the coming judgment and frames it as a cosmic act of the LORD against the nations.
