Hosea

Chapter 5

Judgment on Israel and Judah

Hosea 5 extends the covenant lawsuit by summoning priests, the house of Israel, and the royal house to hear the LORD's judgment. Ephraim's prostitution and Israel's defilement are fully known to God, and Judah is drawn into the same crisis as both kingdoms stumble under pride, guilt, and estrangement from the LORD. The chapter moves from accusation to military alarm and ends with the sobering picture of God withdrawing like a lion until His people acknowledge their guilt and seek Him earnestly in their distress.

Within Hosea, this chapter sharpens the book's judgment theme by showing that neither religious leadership nor political power can shield covenant breakers from divine prosecution. It also reveals the futility of seeking human remedies for a spiritual wound, since Assyria cannot heal what only repentance before the LORD can cure. Hosea 5 therefore prepares for the calls to return that follow by making clear why judgment has become unavoidable and why only God can reverse it.
