Hosea

Chapter 4

God’s Case against His People

Hosea 4 opens the covenant lawsuit in direct form, charging the inhabitants of the land with the absence of truth, covenant love, and knowledge of God. Violence, deceit, sexual corruption, priestly failure, and entrenched idolatry have become so pervasive that even the land itself mourns. The chapter moves from general accusation to the guilt of priests and people alike, ending with a warning that Israel's obstinate attachment to idols is carrying her toward shame and judgment.

Within Hosea, this chapter marks a transition from symbolic family enactments into sustained prophetic prosecution. It establishes that Israel's problem is not a single act of rebellion but a total breakdown of covenant life, from moral order to worship to leadership. Hosea 4 therefore supplies the broad indictment that underlies the later chapters: the people are being destroyed because they have rejected the knowledge of God and given themselves over to adulterous worship.
