Noah’s Favor with God

Noah finds favor with the LORD, and the chapter names him as righteous, blameless in his generation, and one who walks with God. His three sons are then introduced with him.

N8oah, however, found favor in the eyes of the LORD. 9This is the account of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation; Noah walked with God. 10And Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

The earth is shown again as corrupt and filled with violence, and God sees that all flesh has ruined its way. The world's condition is restated in broad terms.

11Now the earth was corrupt in the sight of God, and full of violence. 12And God looked upon the earth and saw that it was corrupt; for all living creatures on the earth had corrupted their ways.

Section summaryAgainst a ruined earth, Noah stands out as a man who finds favor with the LORD, lives rightly, and walks with God. The brief notice of his family is set beside a fresh description of a world corrupt and violent in God's sight.
Role in the chapterThis section narrows the chapter from humanity at large to the one household through whom life will continue. It sets Noah apart without softening the breadth of the world's corruption.
