Abraham and Keturah

Abraham takes Keturah, and the chapter records the sons and descendants born through her. The family line spreads outward in a compact genealogy.

N1ow Abraham had taken another wife, named Keturah, 2and she bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. 3Jokshan was the father of Sheba and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were the Asshurites, the Letushites, and the Leummites. 4The sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah.

Abraham gives his full estate to Isaac, but he gives gifts to the other sons and sends them eastward while he is still alive. The household is ordered around Isaac’s unique place.

5Abraham left everything he owned to Isaac. 6But while he was still alive, Abraham gave gifts to the sons of his concubines and sent them away from his son Isaac to the land of the east.

Section summaryAbraham fathers more sons through Keturah, and their lines are briefly named. Yet the inheritance stays with Isaac, while the other sons receive gifts and are sent east, so the chosen line remains distinct.
Role in the chapterThis opening section tidies the wider family tree while making Isaac’s place unmistakable. It closes Abraham’s household story by showing both his fruitfulness and the deliberate narrowing of the promise.
