Genesis 1:6-8·~1 min
The Second Day
God commands an expanse to divide the waters, makes it so, and names it sky. The second day gives the world its opened space between the waters above and below.
A6nd God said, “Let there be an expanse between the waters, to separate the waters from the waters.” 7So God made the expanse and separated the waters beneath it from the waters above. And it was so. 8God called the expanse “sky.”
Section summaryGod forms an expanse between the waters, dividing what is below from what is above, and calls this expanse sky. The world takes another step toward order as space is opened within the waters.
Role in the chapterThis section continues the shaping of creation by forming the sky as a boundary within the deep. It advances the chapter's movement from undifferentiated waters toward a habitable world.
