Chapter 48

The Portions for the Tribes and more

Ezekiel 48 closes the book by fixing the final arrangement of the restored land, the holy district, the city, and the tribal inheritance. The northern tribes are allotted their east-to-west portions first, then the central holy area is set apart for the sanctuary, the priests, the Levites, the city, and the prince, after which the southern tribes receive their portions. The chapter ends by naming the city gates after the tribes of Israel and declaring the city's future name from that day onward: "The LORD Is There." The vision that began with departure, judgment, and exile therefore ends with ordered inheritance, restored worship, and the abiding presence of God in the midst of His people.

As the last chapter of Ezekiel, this passage gathers the book's major restoration themes into one final picture: holiness at the center, justice in allotment, place for every tribe, protection for priestly and civic life, and a city defined by the LORD's presence. The measured boundaries and named gates show that restoration is not vague but concrete, communal, and enduring. The final city-name answers the whole burden of the book by declaring that the deepest blessing of restoration is not merely land or order, but the renewed reality that the LORD dwells among His people.

In the center will be the sanctuary of the LORD. 11It will be for the consecrated priests, the descendants of Zadok, who kept My charge and did not go astray as the Levites did when the Israelites went astray. 12It will be a special portion for them set apart from the land, a most holy portion adjacent to the territory of the Levites. 13Bordering the territory of the priests, the Levites shall have an area 25,000 cubits long and 10,000 cubits wide. The whole length will be 25,000 cubits, and the width 10,000 cubits. 14They must not sell or exchange any of it, and they must not transfer this best part of the land, for it is holy to the LORD.

T21he remaining area on both sides of the holy portion and of the property of the city will belong to the prince. He will own the land adjacent to the tribal portions, extending eastward from the 25,000 cubits of the holy district toward the eastern border, and westward from the 25,000 cubits to the western border. 1. 01vv. 1-7The Portions for the TribesThe chapter begins by listing the northern tribal portions in order from Dan down to Judah, each running from east to west across the land. The arrangement is orderly and evenly structured, showing that the inheritance of the tribes in the restored land is carefully apportioned and free from the disorder and displacement that marked earlier history.
  2. 02vv. 8-14The Portions for the Priests and LevitesBordering Judah is the holy district to be set apart, with the sanctuary at its center. Within it lies the special portion for the consecrated priests descended from Zadok and the adjacent portion for the Levites. These lands are most holy, belong to those who minister before the LORD, and may not be sold or transferred because they are holy to Him.
  3. 03vv. 15-20The Common PortionThe remaining five-thousand-cubit-wide strip adjoining the holy portion is for common use by the city, its houses, and its pastureland. The city lies in the center of this tract, surrounded by pasture, while the adjoining productive land feeds the workers of the city drawn from all the tribes of Israel. Civic life is therefore provided for without displacing the primacy of the holy district.
  4. 04vv. 21-22The Portion for the PrinceOn both sides of the holy portion and city property lies the remaining land for the prince. His tract stretches east and west beside the tribal allotments, while the sanctuary, Levitical property, and city land remain centered within it between Judah and Benjamin.
  5. 05vv. 23-29The Portions for the Remaining TribesSouth of the central tract the remaining tribal inheritances are assigned from Benjamin down to Gad. The chapter closes this allotment sequence by declaring that this is the land to be distributed among the tribes of Israel as their inheritance.
  6. 06vv. 30-35The City Gates and DimensionsThe chapter ends by naming the exits and gates of the city. Each side of the city has three gates named after tribes of Israel, for a total of twelve gates, and the city's perimeter measures eighteen thousand cubits. From that day on the city receives its climactic name: 'The LORD Is There.'
