Seeking Vashti’s Successor

After some time has passed and the king's anger subsides, he remembers Vashti, what she did, and what was decreed against her.

S1ome time later, when the anger of King Xerxes had subsided, he remembered Vashti and what she had done, and what had been decreed against her.

Verse 1After the king's anger has settled, he remembers Vashti, what she did, and what was decreed against her.

This verse recalls the prior crisis just before the court moves to replace her.

The king's attendants propose a search for beautiful young women across the empire, gathering them into the harem at Susa under Hegai's care so that one who pleases the king can become queen in Vashti's place.

2Then the king’s attendants proposed, “Let a search be made for beautiful young virgins for the king, 3and let the king appoint commissioners in each province of his kingdom to assemble all the beautiful young women into the harem at the citadel of Susa. Let them be placed under the care of Hegai, the king’s eunuch in charge of the women, and let them be given beauty treatments. 4Then let the young woman who pleases the king become queen in place of Vashti.”

Verse 2The king's attendants suggest that a search be made for beautiful young virgins for the king.

This verse introduces the proposed solution from within the court.

Verse 3They advise appointing commissioners in every province to gather the women into the harem at Susa under Hegai, with beauty treatments provided.

This verse shows the empire's reach being used to carry out the search.

Verse 4They propose that the young woman who pleases the king should become queen instead of Vashti.

This verse states the goal of the whole process.

Section summaryWhen the king's anger cools, Vashti's removal leaves an opening the court decides to manage through another imperial process. The search for a successor is organized across the provinces, turning a private absence into a state-managed selection inside the palace.
Role in the chapterThis opening section carries the consequences of chapter 1 forward. It shows the court solving its own decree by expanding the matter into another system of gathering, screening, and replacement.
