The Locusts, Fire, and Plumb Line
Amos first sees swarms of locusts rising at the most vulnerable moment, after the king's harvest and as the late growth begins to emerge. The threat is total, and when the land is stripped Amos cries out for forgiveness, pleading that Jacob is too small to survive. The LORD relents. A second vision follows in which the Lord GOD calls for judgment by fire. This fire is no ordinary blaze; it consumes the great deep and devours the land itself. Again Amos intercedes, asking the Lord to stop because Jacob is so small. Again the LORD relents. These opening visions show both the severity of what Israel deserves and the prophet's willingness to stand in compassionate appeal for the people.
T1his is what the Lord GOD showed me: He was preparing swarms of locusts just after the king’s harvest, as the late spring crop was coming up. 2And when the locusts had eaten every green plant in the land, I said, “Lord GOD, please forgive! How will Jacob survive, since he is so small?” 3So the LORD relented from this plan. “It will not happen,” He said. 4This is what the Lord GOD showed me: The Lord GOD was calling for judgment by fire. It consumed the great deep and devoured the land. 5Then I said, “Lord GOD, please stop! How will Jacob survive, since he is so small?” 6So the LORD relented from this plan. “It will not happen either,” said the Lord GOD.
The third vision changes the pattern. The Lord is seen standing by a wall with a plumb line in His hand, and He asks Amos to name what he sees. The image suggests exactness, uprightness, and measured exposure. Israel is no longer merely under threat from external disaster; it is being assessed by God's own standard. The verdict is final: the LORD is setting a plumb line in the midst of His people and will no longer pass by them. The high places of Isaac will be deserted, Israel's sanctuaries will be laid waste, and the house of Jeroboam will face the sword. The chapter thus moves from stayed judgment to declared inevitability.
7This is what He showed me: Behold, the Lord was standing by a wall true to plumb, with a plumb line in His hand. 8“Amos, what do you see?” asked the LORD. 9The high places of Isaac will be deserted,
