David’s Last Song

The poem opens by naming these as David’s final words and grounding them in divine speech. David speaks as one addressed and raised up by the God of Israel.

T1hese are the last words of David: 2The Spirit of the LORD spoke through me; 3The God of Israel spoke;

The just ruler is compared to dawn light over the earth, and David places his confidence in the lasting covenant God has made with his house. That covenant is treated as his safety and hope.

4is like the light of the morning 5Is not my house right with God?

The worthless are not gathered in but cast aside like thorns that cannot be handled directly. They are reserved for force and for burning where they lie.

6But the worthless are all like thorns raked aside, 7The man who touches them must be armed with iron

Section summaryDavid’s last words present his kingship as something spoken under God’s Spirit and measured by the image of a ruler who brings clear morning light. The song then rests on God’s covenant with David’s house and ends by setting the worthless apart for destruction.
Role in the chapterThis opening section gives a final theological reading of David’s reign before the chapter turns to the men who served within it. It leaves the reader with God’s speech, God’s covenant, and God’s judgment as the frame around David’s life.
