Ish-bosheth Made King of Israel

Abner takes Ish-bosheth to Mahanaim and makes him king over the regions named as all Israel. Saul’s house is reassembled under military sponsorship rather than public unity.

M8eanwhile, Abner son of Ner, the commander of Saul’s army, took Saul’s son Ish-bosheth, moved him to Mahanaim, 9and made him king over Gilead, Asher, Jezreel, Ephraim, and Benjamin— over all Israel.

The narrative gives Ish-bosheth’s age and short reign, then contrasts it with Judah’s allegiance to David and the length of David’s rule in Hebron. The numbers quietly show how uneven the two reigns are.

10Saul’s son Ish-bosheth was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and he reigned for two years. 11The house of Judah, however, followed David. And the length of time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.

Section summaryWhile David rules in Judah, Abner carries Saul’s son Ish-bosheth to Mahanaim and sets him over the rest of Israel. The chapter pauses to name the divided claims plainly: Ish-bosheth reigns in Israel, but Judah follows David for much longer in Hebron.
Role in the chapterThis section establishes the split kingdom that drives the conflict ahead. It shows that David’s anointing does not settle the succession, because Saul’s house still holds power through Abner’s action.
