Jehoiachin Reigns in Judah

Jehoiakim dies and Jehoiachin takes the throne, while Babylon’s control expands so fully that Egypt no longer advances beyond its own land.

A6nd Jehoiakim rested with his fathers, and his son Jehoiachin reigned in his place. 7Now the king of Egypt did not march out of his land again, because the king of Babylon had taken all his territory, from the Brook of Egypt to the Euphrates River.

Jehoiachin begins to reign at eighteen, rules only three months in Jerusalem, and is judged to have done evil as his father did.

8Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months. His mother’s name was Nehushta daughter of Elnathan; she was from Jerusalem. 9And he did evil in the sight of the LORD, just as his father had done.

Section summaryJehoiakim dies and Jehoiachin succeeds him, while Babylon’s power now stretches from Egypt’s border to the Euphrates. Jehoiachin’s reign is brief, carefully dated and situated, and judged in the same dark pattern as his father’s.
Role in the chapterThis section marks the dynastic transition while showing that Judah’s room to maneuver has vanished. It keeps the moral diagnosis in place just before Jerusalem’s surrender.
