Jehu Repeats Jeroboam’s Sins

Jehu eradicates Baal, but he keeps the sins of Jeroboam and does not walk carefully before the LORD with all his heart. Even so, the LORD rewards him with a lasting line for what he did to Ahab’s house.

T28hus Jehu eradicated Baal from Israel, 29but he did not turn away from the sins that Jeroboam son of Nebat had caused Israel to commit— the worship of the golden calves at Bethel and Dan. 30Nevertheless, the LORD said to Jehu, “Because you have done well in carrying out what is right in My sight and have done to the house of Ahab all that was in My heart, four generations of your sons will sit on the throne of Israel.” 31Yet Jehu was not careful to follow the instruction of the LORD, the God of Israel, with all his heart. He did not turn away from the sins that Jeroboam had caused Israel to commit.

During Jehu’s days the LORD begins to cut Israel down, and Hazael defeats Israel across its eastern lands. Territory from the Arnon through Gilead to Bashan is struck.

32In those days the LORD began to reduce the size of Israel. Hazael defeated the Israelites throughout their territory 33from the Jordan eastward through all the land of Gilead (the region of Gad, Reuben, and Manasseh), and from Aroer by the Arnon Valley through Gilead to Bashan.

Section summaryJehu removes Baal from Israel, but he does not leave the calf worship of Bethel and Dan behind. The LORD grants his house a four-generation dynasty for what he did to Ahab, yet Jehu’s divided obedience is followed by the shrinking of Israel under Hazael’s attacks.
Role in the chapterThis section gives the chapter’s central judgment on Jehu. It refuses to let zeal against one evil stand in for whole-hearted faithfulness, and it explains why his reign holds both reward and decline.
