Amon Reigns in Judah

Amon comes to the throne young and reigns briefly, doing evil as Manasseh had done before. He serves the idols his father made, but unlike Manasseh he does not humble himself and only increases his guilt.

A21mon was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem two years. 22And he did evil in the sight of the LORD, as his father Manasseh had done. 23Amon served and sacrificed to all the idols that his father Manasseh had made, but he did not humble himself before the LORD as his father Manasseh had done; instead, Amon increased his guilt.

Amon’s servants conspire against him and kill him in his palace. The people of the land then kill the conspirators and place Josiah on the throne.

24Then the servants of Amon conspired against him and killed him in his palace. 25But the people of the land killed all those who had conspired against King Amon, and they made his son Josiah king in his place.

Section summaryAmon reigns only two years, walking in the evil patterns associated with his father’s earlier life while refusing the humility that marked Manasseh’s return. His growing guilt ends in assassination, and the people answer the conspiracy by killing the plotters and making Josiah king.
Role in the chapterThis closing section narrows the lesson by contrast. Where Manasseh’s story turned through humbling, Amon’s does not, and his brief reign clears the way for Josiah’s accession.
